An implant-retained denture is a type of denture that is secured in place using dental implants, which are small titanium posts surgically placed into the jawbone. These implants act like artificial tooth roots, and the denture “snaps” or attaches onto them for better stability. Often used for lower dentures, where regular dentures are more likely to slip, but they can be used for upper dentures too.

Here’s a simple breakdown:

Traditional dentures rest on the gums and can move around or slip.

Implant-retained dentures are anchored to implants, offering a more secure and comfortable fit.

Ball-retained (locator) dentures The denture has sockets that fit over ball-shaped attachments on the implants.

Benefits:
  • Much more stable than traditional dentures
  • Improved chewing and speaking
  • Less irritation of the gums
  • Preserves jawbone (because the implants stimulate the bone)
